Canine Policy
Student Owned Canine
A
student/member may work with his or her own family
canine upon approval of Best Friends 4- H Club
Coordinator, Co-Coordinator and/or Class Instructor(s).
Volunteer Canine
Best Friends 4-H Club understands that
not every child is fortunate to have a canine of his or
her own. Should this be the case, Best Friends 4-H Club
leaders will try his or her utmost to find a documented
temperament tested volunteer canine for the child to
work with.

Canine Owner’s Responsibility
- Owner of a
canine comprehends and with his or her signature, agrees
to take upon him or herself full responsibility of his
or her canine’s behavior and actions.
- Owner
understands that if said canine displays behavior that
is unsuitable for the safety of another canine and/or
human being, said behavior would constitute an immediate
dismissal from the club and removal from the grounds.
- Owner of canine
is responsible for the transportation of his or her
canine(s) to and from the practice site and the Berrien
County Youth Fair.
- Owner will
remain on the premises until practice session and/or
fair has finished.
- Owner
understands and agrees to have his or her canine
“Immaculately groomed according to breed.” (Disabled
Exhibitor with Canine Agility and Obedience Judge’s
Procedures and Guidelines, Section 8; Paragraph 5.)
- Owner is
responsible for complying with the Berrien County Youth
Fair Dog Rules and Regulation regarding canine
immunizations. (See the Berrien County Youth Fair yearly
Exhibitor Handbook Department 9 - Dogs.)
- Owner is
responsible for supplying the following canine items for
classes and the Berrien County Youth Fair.
- One
Tagless Buckle Collar
- One
Volhard/Snap Collar, Martingale or Body Harness
(depending on the training technique needs.)
- One Water
Jug filled with water
- One Hand
Towel
- Four Poop
Bags
- One Spray
Bottle filled with disinfectant for accidents on the
agility equipment.
- One Roll
of Paper Towel

Best
Friends 4-H Club Canine Registration
Form
- For a canine
to be eligible for participation in the Best Friends 4-H
Club Canine Therapy Program, the owner of said canine
must completed a Best Friends 4-H Club Canine
Registration Form, which must be signed by the canine’s owner
and veterinarian.

Completed
Canine Registration Forms are due on the first Monday in
May of each year.

Canine
Temperament Certificate(s)
- Optional
- Canine by the age of nine to twelve months must have
acquire an American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. Certificate.
(Socialization, Training, Activity and a Responsible
Owner.)
- Required
- Canine by
age two years, will have acquired, or will be testing
for within the next six months after registration, one
or all of the following temperament testing
certificates;
- American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Certificate
(CGC)
- American Kennel Club Canine Companion Dog
Certificate (CD)
- Therapy Dog International Certificate (TDI)
- United Dog Club Companion Dog Certificate (CD)
- One COPY of the
temperament test certificate must accompany the canine’s
first registration form when achieved.

Canine
Vaccinations
- Best Friends
4-H Club will adhere to the Berrien County Youth Fair
Yearly Exhibitor Canine Vaccination Rules found in the
yearly Exhibitor Handbook. Those canine immunizations
are:
- Distemper
- Hepatitis
- Parvo
- Rabies
- Bordatella
- Lepto is
recommended,
but not necessary
- 3
year shots are acceptable, but must be administered
between September and July.

Canine Body
Harness
Should a Team
Canine require a body harness for training, the owner must
- Fill out the
Body Harness Section found on the Canine Registration
Form, stating the diagnosis and requirements for a body
harness to be used as a training tool.
- Veterinarian
must sign the Canine Registration Form affirming the
need for a body harness.

Berrien
County Youth Fair Vaccination Certificates
Best Friends 4-H
Club Canine Yearly Registration and Immunization Form, when
signed by the canine’s
veterinarian, along with his or her place of
employment's address and telephone number, are
considered valid certification by the Berrien County Youth Fair.

Berrien County
Youth Fair Canine
Registration Photograph
- The Berrien
County Youth Fair requires a "current photo or
tattoo number" accompanying the canine's
registration.
- Best
Friends 4-H Club will set aside the first two Mondays in
June for canine photos that will be used for the Berrien
County Youth Fair Canine Registration.

Canine
Availability
- Canine must be
made available, along with his or her owner, and attend the Team Instructor’s Classes
held in May
of every year.
- Canine must be
made available for the assigned student/member to
practice his or her canine lessons with on every
scheduled meeting night during June, July and August.
- Canine
must be made available for the Berrien County Youth Fair
Exhibition in Department 9 - Division 2; Canine Exhibitor with
Disabilities.

Bitches in Menses (Season)
- Bitches in
menses (season) will not participate in canine training
classes for understandable reasons.
- Bitches in
menses (season) can participate in the Berrien County
Youth Fair Exhibition in Department 9 - Division 2;
Disabled Exhibitor with Dog with the following
precautions;
- Bitches in menses will wear “Bloomers” (diapers).
- Bitches in menses will be crated in a safe area away
from the competition/evaluation rings so not to
distract the other canines.
- Bitches in menses will be shown out of judging class
order and will enter the competition/evaluation ring
after all classes have finished.

Canine
Absence
Should a canine
not be available for class or the Berrien County Youth
Fair exhibition due to understandable reasons, a Reserve
Canine may be substituted for the day upon approval of
Best Friends 4-H Club Leader(s)
Pairing of a Canine with a Student/Member and Team
Instructor
Best Friends
4-H Club Leaders will have the final decision as to
which student will be paired with which Team Instructor
and Canine.
