Canine Exhibitor with Disabilities

Department 9 - Division 2

Welcome to the Berrien County Youth Fair Dog Department 9 - Division 2; Canine Exhibitor with Disabilities Obedience and Agility Judging Program!

The Berrien County Youth Fair Canine Exhibitor with Disabilities canine competition and evaluation is one of Best Friends 4-H club members yearly project goals.  Best Friends leaders would like you to know the history behind this wonderful program...

The obedience and agility therapy judging procedures and guidelines were specifically designed for the forgotten handler of our community...the life challenged exhibitor.

Developing a canine judging program began in nineteen ninety-five when ten  dedicated women and one dedicated man came together and decided to design a valid canine obedience and agility judging program for our life challenged exhibitors.

Those women were;

Margaret Russell; Berrien County Youth Fair Dog Department Superintendent.

Linda Shannon-Chaillet; Berrien County Youth Fair Dog Assistant Superintendent, Best Friends 4-H Club Coordinator, American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, Berrien County 4-H Spring Achievement Canine Evaluation Chair

Jane Evans; Best Friends 4-H Club Co-Coordinator (1995-2007)

Sue Hayes; Best Friends 4-H Club Secretary

Rosie Meister; Best Friends 4-H Club Anatomy Class Instructor

Vicki Williams; Berrien County Youth Fair Dog Department Assistant Superintendent, Best Friends 4-H Club Co-Coordinator and Obedience Class Instructor

Betsy Farrell, Best Friends 4-H Club Agility Class Instructor

Linda Pries;  Best Friends 4-H Club Good Sportsmanship Class Instructor

Jim Farrell, Best Friends Best Friends 4-H Club Team Instructor

Linda Reimers;  Best Friends 4-H Club Team Instructor

Sue Corliss;  Best Friends 4-H Club Team Instructor

The modules for this endeavor were

  1. Best Friends 4-H Club Mission Goals
  2. The Newfoundland Club of America Draft Test
  3. The Newfoundland Club of America Water Rescue Test
  4. The American Kennel Club Obedience Rules and Regulations
  5. The American Kennel Club Agility Rules and Regulations
  6. The American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Program

These ten committed explorers held many a discussion while studying the challenges that faced our forgotten canine handlers.  Finally, after several years of experimentation, adaptation and meeting upon meeting, (not to mention all the typing, correcting, negating and retyping) of the canine obedience and agility concepts, these proactive people came up with a program that will last for years to come, yet, continue to grow as it meets the new life challenges of our exhibitors.
